Collagen is the holy grail of all anti-ageing treatments. From topical application, ingestible supplements, injectable treatments or even laser and microneedling skin tightening procedures, they all have one thing in common, they target Collagen delivery to our skin. Each promises to combat the signs of ageing by replenishing the body’s supply of this critical protein, enhancing natural collagen production, collagen supplementation, and new collagen as skin boosters. Let’s break it down to simple benefits and direct comparisons to help you choose what suits you and your lifestyle best.
Understanding Collagen Basics
Collagen Role
Collagen serves as the support structure for our skin, joints, and tissues. It’s composed of amino acids that bind together to form collagen molecules. These molecules create a fibrous network in our skin that enhances elasticity and strength.
The body naturally synthesises collagen, playing a critical role in maintaining skin elasticity and joint health. As we age, however, our body’s ability to produce collagen diminishes by 1.5% every year after the age of 25. This reduction leads to visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles and decreased skin firmness.
Age Impact
With advancing years, the natural decline in collagen production becomes evident. This decrease affects the skin’s appearance, leading to loss of elasticity, the formation of wrinkles, and a less youthful complexion.
The reason behind this is simple: fewer collagen molecules mean less support for the skin’s outer layer. The impact is not just cosmetic; it also influences joint discomfort due to diminished cushioning.
Collagen Sources
Collagen comes from various sources, mainly marine and animal tissues, such as Beef, chicken, fish, and eggshell. These sources are rich in the amino acids necessary for collagen synthesis within the body. Each source provides specific types that may have unique benefits for skin health, joint pain, or overall wellness.
Marine collagen, derived from fish, is highly valued for its bioavailability and absorption rates. Animal-based collagen typically comes from bovine or porcine sources, so not an option for vegetarians and vegans. Both forms are widely used in supplements aimed at boosting collagen levels in the body.
Collagen delivery methods:
- Oral delivery: collagen supplements or ingestible
- Injectable collages: for example: dermal filler, Collagen boosters (Profilo ®), collagen biostimulators (Polynucleotides).
- Topical collagen creams: hyaluronic acid creams
Ingestible collagen (Collagen supplements)
Oral supplements aim to boost overall collagen production within the body. They often contain hydrolyzed forms of collagen, which are easier for the body to absorb.
The market offers several types of supplements:
- Liquid collagen drinks
- Collagen powder
- Collagen pills
Liquid vs Powder Collagen
Absorption Rates
Is the most important point to consider when it comes to collagen supplements. Liquid collagen boasts a higher absorption rate compared to its powdered counterpart. This is due to the pre-dissolved nature of collagen in liquid form, which allows the body to absorb it more readily. Studies suggest that liquid collagen can enter the bloodstream more efficiently, enhancing its effectiveness in promoting skin hydration and elasticity.
Powdered collagen, while still beneficial, may take longer for the body to break down and utilise. The process involves mixing the powder with a liquid before it can be ingested, adding an extra step before absorption begins.
Lifestyle Fit
For individuals with hectic schedules, liquid collagen presents a convenient option. It’s easy to consume on the go, requiring no preparation time. Many find this form ideal for integrating into their daily routines without hassle.
Conversely, powder collagen offers versatility. It can be incorporated into various recipes, from smoothies to baked goods, allowing for a seamless addition of collagen into one’s diet.
Collagen pills, however, are the most portable and hence easiest to fit into your lifestyle.
Taste Preferences
Taste is a significant factor when choosing between liquid and powder forms of collagen. Liquid supplements often come in flavoured varieties that mask the natural taste of collagen, which some describe as minimally fishy. This makes them more palatable for most users.
Powdered supplements, however, can sometimes have a chalky texture or taste if not mixed well with other ingredients.
Collagen pills being fairly tasteless, although some people may have swallowing difficulties.
Injectable collagen
Studies show that injectable collagen being the most effective type of delivery when it comes to targeted effect. You can see the results directly into the injected area within a faster turnover compared to ingestible collagen.
Types of Injectable Collagen:
- Dermal filler: for restoring areas of lost volume, adding a bit of contouring where needed or rejuvenating a deflated area.
- Skin boosters such as Profhilo ( R): acts like an injectable moisturiser by replacing lost collagen directly. Adds glows, hydration and plumpness to the area treated, a few weeks later.
- Polynucleotides, also knows as “Salmon sperm” or “Fish sperm” or “Fish DNA” are biostimulators, as in they stimulate the body to produce not only its own collagen, which is the best form of collagen, but also elastin amd fibroblasts (new skin cell). So if you ask me this is the ultimate form of collagen form that exists thus far.
Liquid vs Injectable Collagen
Liquid collagen offers a non-invasive alternative to collagen injections. People can consume it daily as part of their routine without medical procedures. This approach suits those wary of needles or surgical interventions.
Injectable collagen, on the other hand, requires visits to a clinic, where professionals administer these dermal fillers, skin boosters, and/or polynucleotides to address skin laxity and volume loss. This can be more expensive; however, it is definitely more effective.
Collagen Creams
Topical application of hyaluronic acid creams on the face/skin.
Users can integrate them into their skincare routine without much hassle. They simply apply the cream to areas needing attention by offering immediate moisturization on a surface level, as the molecules are too large to penetrate the epidermis effectively. This limits their ability to boost collagen in deeper layers where it’s most needed. Considering efficacy and cost, this might not be your best option. However, it plays a complementary effect.
Dr Zeena’s personal favourites:
- I find injectables most effective, to the point and no beating around the bush. My personal favourites are Polynucleotides; these are my current number one. However, I still like Profhilo ®, so I find myself alternating between the two every few months.
- That being said, I’m a big believer in collagen supplements, as they have their glorious systemic effect on the whole body’s skin from the face, neck, decolletage, tummy, arms, hands and much more. SkinAde is easily my favourite brand.
- If you are after the “Holy Grail” of collagen, I would add hyaluronic acid creams into your skin care routine. This way you’re attacking the collagen reduction from all angles. I do include that in my skin care routine, however, it is the least effective delivery method.
Summary
Navigating the world of collagen supplements, creams, and injectables can seem daunting, but armed with the right information, you can make choices that best suit your health and beauty goals. Whether you lean towards Liquid supplements for convenience, pills for ease of use, creams for targeted application, or injectables for most effective results, understanding each option’s benefits and drawbacks ensures you invest wisely in your skincare routine.
